Associate Research Scientist position in Geology and Geophysics, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University

An Associate Research Scientist position is available commencing on or about September 1, 2017 at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in the division of Marine Geology and Geophysics. The successful candidate will be involved in multidisciplinary projects studying subsidence in multiple settings. The primary field area will be the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and IndoBurma subduction zone studying sedimentary and tectonics processes and their interaction. Secondary field areas will be the Marmara Sea and Gulf of Kusadasi in Western Turkey. The successful candidate will be involved in quantifying and modeling the subsidence in these areas using a variety of tools and data sets. Data includes multichannel seismic images, stratigraphy from wells and outcrop, and gravity. The projects will make use of backstripping and compaction estimation, thermal modeling, gravity and flexural modeling, seismic processing and interpretation, and stratigraphic modeling. Familiarity with Kingdom Suite and Temis will be considered positively, as will previous field experience and/or familiarity with the field areas.

Requirements: We seek a highly motivated scientist with at least three years of relevant employment experience after having been awarded a Ph.D in Geology or Geophysics. Candidates are expected to have established their ability to conduct original, independent scientific research, to work well in a team, and to communicate the results of their research or research activities effectively both orally and in writing, with a record of publications in scientific literature.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
