Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

29 Palms Marine Base and the Landers rupture

Date: 01/23/2018

On Behalf of Doug Yule, CSU Northridge:
--------------------------------------------------------

*From SCEC: Please contact Doug Yule, Doug.Yule@csun.edu, for any questions regarding this announcement.*

Dear fans of the 1992 Landers rupture.

This may be news to only me, but I have learned that the 29 Palms Marine Base has been expanded to include a significant part of the Landers rupture (see attached pdf). The central portion of the rupture, and classic offset sites, now fall under "Military Only Use". As such, any field trips to view this part of the rupture may be impossible, although marines that I spoke with said that permission can be granted in special cases, but will require far-in-advance planning.

And the south-central portion, to the north of the residential parts of Johnson Valley and Landers, fall under "Shared Use" status. This means access is prohibited during large-scale military exercises.

Also, please note that a public hearing will be held on April 14, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. in Lucerne Valley, CA, ahead of a large-scale military exercise planned for Aug 1-30, 2018.

Sincerely,

Doug Yule
CSU Northridge

Want to send an announcement to the SCEC community?
SCEC community announcement requests should be sent to scecinfo@usc.edu (no attachments) with the following requirements, in order to best standardize announcements and provide maximum security for recipients. These requirements also ensure that various email applications and any applied filters reach the recipient as the announcement was intended.
1) Use this style guide :
• All text must be in Helvetica, 12 pt.
• Bold, italics, and underline formatting is permitted.
• Consider the length of web links; use bit.ly or tinyurl.com to shorten them as needed.
• NO PDFs, Word Docs, images, or other attachments - all content must be in the email request itself.
2) Include a subject line.

3) Remember, send your request to scecinfo@usc.edu.

We strive to send announcements as soon as possible. In general, expect a 2-3 business day turn-around. We may also combine announcements with others, delay sending certain announcements due to current events, and even reject requests if they do not fit the needs of the SCEC community.
