The US Geological Survey (USGS), Earthquake Monitoring Project (EMP), has one open position for a Physical Science Technician within the Northern California Seismic Network (NCSN). The position is located in Menlo Park, California.

The USGS Earthquake Monitoring Project works in collaboration with the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory for recording and monitoring seismic activity in Northern California. The NCSN consists of approximately 600 stations, dedicated telemetry systems, and numerous real-time, analysis and notification computer systems. The EMP also oversees the National Strong Motion Project, which installs and operates instrumentation in structures such as buildings, dams, and bridges whose response to strong shaking is of interest to the engineering community.

The Physical Science Technician incumbents are responsible for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of the field equipment of the NCSN. This work is performed in collaboration with USGS and other partner personnel. The incumbents are responsible for a wide variety of equipment used for seismic monitoring, data acquisition, power, computer networking, and communications. This equipment is located throughout northern and central California, including at remote sites in a wide variety of environments.

The selected employees will jump into an exciting work environment where they will contribute to Earthquake Early Warning activities and the upgrade and installation of new instrumentation, the expansion and upgrade of volcano monitoring efforts, and an overhaul of the telemetry backbone of the network.

We strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Georgia Tech has policies to promote a healthy work-life balance and is aware that attracting faculty may require meeting the needs of two careers.

4. SMIP18 Seminar on Utilization of Strong-motion Data:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP) in the California Geological Survey (CGS) of the Department of Conservation established a Data Interpretation Project in 1989. Each year CSMIP funds several data interpretation projects for the analysis and utilization of strong-motion data. The objectives of the Data Interpretation Project are to further the understanding of strong ground shaking and the response of structures, to increase the utilization of strong-motion data in post-earthquake response, and to improve seismic design code provisions and design practices.
As part of the Data Interpretation Project, CSMIP holds annual seminars to transfer recent research findings on strong-motion data to practicing seismic design professionals, earth scientists and earthquake response personnel. The purpose of the annual seminar is to provide information that will be useful in seismic design practice, post-earthquake response, and the improvement of seismic design codes and practices.
This year’s seminar will include presentations on strong ground motions from earthquakes with multiple faults, basin effects in ergodic site response, building code accidental torsional provisions, building soil-structure interaction mechanisms, earthquake-induced earth dam deformations, seismic response of bridge-ground systems, building damage detection using cumulative absolute velocity, and instrumentation of two new super tall buildings in California.
Date: October 25, 2018, Thursday
Location: California State lottery Headquarters, 700 North 10th Street, Sacramento
5. Banff 2018 International Induced Seismicity Workshop:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Banff 2018 International Induced Seismicity Workshop: Oct. 24-27, 2018
Location: Banff Park Lodge, Banff, Alberta, Canada

The Banff 2018 induced seismicity workshop will bring together academics, industry and regulators to discuss learning from induced seismicity. The theme of the workshop is bridging and integrating knowledge across sectors, and across different induced seismicity settings and types. The workshop will be held in Banff, Alberta, a national park setting in Canada’s Rocky Mountains that is known worldwide for its scenic beauty. The format will be a single oral session, capped at 150 participants (including academics, industry, regulators; from Canada, the U.S., Europe and China); the workshop will strike a balance between regions and sectors to stimulate comprehensive discussions that encompass many perspectives. The number of formal talks will be limited to allow ample Q&A and a discussion panel for each session. Lively interactive poster sessions will facilitate wide-ranging presentations and discussions. The program will include sessions on Processes leading to large failure events, Hazard and Mitigation, High-quality datasets: Hits and Misses, Regulatory and Policy approaches, Data mining with novel analysis techniques, and Concluding Panel Discussion.General information on the workshop is posted inwww.inducedseismicity.ca/Banff2018 and will be updated as more material becomes available.

6. Wiess and the Pan Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, Rice University:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Rice University is inviting applications for the Wiess and the Pan Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. We are seeking candidates with independent research interests that intersect with one or more faculty within our department. Both domestic and international applicants are welcome, but applicants must have a Ph.D. awarded within three years of the time of appointment.

The research fellowships will be supported for two years, pending satisfactory progress during the first year, and covers an annual stipend of $60,000 with a benefits package and an additional annual discretionary research allowance of $3,500.

Applicants are requested to develop a proposal of research to be undertaken during the fellowship period. The principal selection criteria are scientific excellence, a clearly expressed research plan to address questions at the forefront of their field of study, and research synergies with at least one faculty. The proposed research should, however, encompass independent research ideas and explore new directions beyond the applicant’s Ph.D. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposals demonstrate independence and originality, and also the potential for collaboration with one or more faculty in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences.

The application for both fellowships is due on 1 November, 2018. Applicants are required to submit one application only at http://jobs.rice.edu/postings/15058. The application should include the following documents:
(1) A cover letter.
(2) A research proposal of no more than 3 pages (not counting references) of single-spaced text and figures.
(3) A current CV, including a list of publications.

As part of the online application, the applicant will also have to provide the names and contact information of three or more people who will be asked to submit reference letters by the same deadline.
