Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

2. USGS Pasadena. Network Engineer Position:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Job opportunity with the USGS!

Applications are due 12/17/2018!

The USGS Earthquake Science Center Pasadena office is hiring a Network Engineer for the Southern California Seismic Network

United States Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking motivated candidates for a Network Engineer for the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN).

SCSN, one of the largest regional seismic networks in the world, has over 400 stations that measure ground shaking from earthquakes. SCSN provides reliable, accurate, authoritative earthquake information to emergency personnel, businesses, scientists, and the public.

The incumbent in this operational position will design, install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the SCSN wide area network to achieve rapid, reliable, secure communications between field stations and central processing computers, using a variety of technologies: microwave, cellular, wireless, satellite, radio, T1, MPLS, and more.

This position is being offered in Pasadena, CA. Openings for this full-time, permanent position are being advertised as an IT Specialist (Network) (2210) at the GS-11/12/13 level. US citizenship is required. Only online applications will be accepted. The federal government is an equal opportunity employer.

Please be sure to submit all the requested materials, including transcripts by December 17, 2018 – and please do not wait until the last minute to apply. If you have questions about the application process, please contact Earl Emerson at pacsac1@usgs.gov.

3. Mendenhall Postdoctoral Opportunity: The relation of earthquake stress drop to source physics and ground motion:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We seek a postdoctoral fellow to focus on earthquake stress drops in order to reduce uncertainty in measurements and more fully understand the energetics of earthquake rupture. Stress drop is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs), and by improving the resolution of stress drops we can reduce the uncertainty in key USGS products such as ShakeMap and early warning alerts. The research effort will be largely determined by the postdoctoral fellow’s background and interests, but should align broadly with USGS Earthquake Hazards Program priorities. Potential areas of research may include: 1) The relation of stress drop to source properties (i.e., geometry, area, depth, mechanism, pore pressure, etc.), 2) Exploration of stress drop as a control on ground motion parameters that are important to hazard, and 3) Comparison of stress drops derived using a range of methodologies and rigorously assess uncertainties in the measured source parameters.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) seeks outstanding candidates for an Assistant or Associate Professor position in theoretical/computational geophysics. We invite applicants with expertise in modeling of geophysical signals or processes, improved methods for data analysis/inversion, mathematical descriptions of relevant physics, and high-performance computing and/or machine learning applied to geophysical problems. Possible areas of interest include, but are not limited to: geodynamics, crustal deformation and geodesy, mineral physics, planetary science, remote sensing, marine geophysics, potential fields, geomagnetism, electromagnetic methods, seismology, and cryosphere studies. Emphasis will be on selecting a candidate with interest and experience in developing new methodological approaches rather than applications of existing geophysical techniques. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential for research excellence, teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, collegiality, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in a relevant field is required at the time of application. For full consideration, please apply by January 31, 2019.
