Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

SCEC SURE Intern Program - Host an Intern

Date: 11/20/2019

On Behalf of Gabriela Noriega, SCEC:
---------------------------------------------------

Dear SCEC Community,

Are you interested in mentoring an intern for the 2020 SURE summer program? The SCEC Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SCEC/SURE) pairs an undergraduate student, one-on-one, to conduct research with SCEC researchers. Students conduct field, laboratory, and/or theoretical research under the supervision of leading scientists in fields that range from geophysics to earthquake geology and computer science.

If paired with an intern:
• SCEC will provide the selected intern travel support to and from the research location, a living allowance of $2,500 for meals and lodging during the internship, and a stipend of $4,000.
• SCEC/SURE mentors are responsible for all direct costs associated with the research project (supplies, field travel, etc). It is appropriate that the research project be in line with SCEC’s science priorities, but it is not necessary that it be a SCEC-funded project.
• We expect interns to participate in an 8-10 week summer program, participate in the SCEC fieldtrip (June 25-26), and present their research at the SCEC Annual Meeting (SCECAM costs covered by SCEC).

How it works:
1 Apply to be a SCEC/SURE mentor by completing this Intern Request Form by Friday, Dec 6.
2 Mentors who are matched with a SCEC/SURE intern will be notified as early as February or March.
3 Once the mentor and intern are paired, they will agree on start/end dates of internship.
4 NOTE: Completing this SCEC SURE Intern Request Form does not obligate you to accept a student. We will work with you to make “sure” the intern and research opportunity are a good match.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Regards,

Gabriela Noriega, Ph.D.
