Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Date: 09/28/2022

Dear SCEC Community,

Please see below for an announcement regarding an online event next week — a community near-fault observatory breakout session on spatial variations of rock properties and deformation processes across rupture zones.

Community Near-Fault Observatory - Breakout Session - Spatial Variations of Rock Properties and Deformation Processes Across Rupture Zones - October 6, 2022 12:30-2pm ET

Please join us on Thursday October 6th at 12:30-2:00 PM Eastern for…

Community Near-Fault Observatory - Breakout Session
Spatial Variations of Rock Properties and Deformation Processes Across Rupture Zone
Convened by Ashley Griffith and Ramon Arrowsmith

Register: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJItcOyvqDMiH92IF57XPg9pO5-DUOXpC_MM

Geophysical data collected within rupture zones of significant earthquakes are essential for testing and developing further models of earthquake processes. This breakout session is one in a series of sessions intended to gather input from the broader earthquake science community on key research areas, science questions, and the data and experiments needed to address them in the near-fault zone. The breakout session will be recorded and archived on the IRIS Earthquake Science Presentations YouTube channel and the discussion will inform future sessions, workshops, and proposals. At this session we will hear from:

  • Josie Nevitt (USGS Earthquake Science Center)
  • Alba M. Rodriguez Padilla (University of California Davis)
  • Chelsea Scott (Arizona State University)

This event will be held in Zoom Meeting format and will feature presentations along with time for Q&A and discussion. A recording will be made available on YouTube after the event. We welcome others to get in touch if they would like to present at or organize a breakout session in the future.

For background on the community near-fault observatory concept, please watch this presentation (<15 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkS7SdSYqrs.
