Intellectual Merit 1) Seismologists have attempted to resolve the rupture characteristics of small events for many years. In our recent efforts, Luo et al. (2010), we have documented the ability to determine both rupture velocity and fault length as independent parameters. In Tan and Helmberger (2010), we show that the rupture properties of earthquakes depends on fault conditions, i.e., well developed faults (old) have high rupture velocity as opposed to new faults (young).
Broader Impacts 2) This support helps to exploit the current database and address important issues for other SCEC groups, i.e., Fault and Rupture Mechanics, in providing key information for understanding dynamic modeling. Furthers the understanding of high-frequency strong motion estimation especially in the L.A. Basin.
