Intellectual Merit A key goal of the Earthquake Geology Disciplinary Activity and the SoSAFE Special Project is to document the earthquake ages and displacements for past ruptures on the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults. This project did not pursue that question directly, rather it prompted discussion and collaboration between paleoseismologists and modelers that work on that system. The primary product, a major proposal to NSF Tectonics, forced the group to identify further scientific goals and new approaches to understanding the fault behavior of this system.
Broader Impacts The proposal-writing component of this project promoted learning and collaboration among ten PIs from nine institutions. Given the 15-page limit at NSF, we were required to distill our many ideas and field plans into the most salient and most coherent scientific goals for the project. Although all of the field work will be completed in southern California, the group included a wide geographic distribution of PIs (over half from outside CA), two young faculty, and overall improved and likely facilitated future collaborations between groups that have not previously worked together.

The SoSAFE Workshop at the Annual Meeting serves to communicate past research accomplishments and future research goals to the broader SCEC community. As in past years, we had over 140 attendees, emphasizing the continued interest in SoSAFE activities by other SCEC researchers and students.
