Project Abstract
The purpose of the March 15, 2013 SCEC Rupture Dynamics Code Comparison Workshop was to discuss the results for our group’s most recent benchmarks, TPV22-23, and 24-25, which are fault stepovers and fault branches, respectively, and to plan our next science steps for 2013-2014. We also observed a laboratory earthquake on the USGS’s ‘big block’, learned about how our work fits into the big picture of earthquake engineering application, and learned about spontaneous rupture models of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. For more information about our code comparison group and the benchmarks, please see the SCEC/USGS Spontaneous Rupture Code Verification Project website: http://scecdata.usc.edu/cvws.

Broader Impacts 37 people participated in this workshop, including 8 remotely, and 29 in the meeting room. This year’s workshop included at least 6 new people, among them 3 new students and 2 new postdocs. Our attendees this year included scientists from 4 countries (Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, U.S.A.), with outside-U.S. attendees participating remotely. At least 13 of our 37 participants were either students or postdocs. In my opinion, our SCEC group is the world leader in dynamic rupture computational science, and this is why so many people once they learn about us are eager to follow our progress, and join us if it is geographically convenient. Our group members stay engaged if they stay in the field. We are now in our 10th year because our group members still want to collaborate on these types of research problems.
Exemplary Figure There aren't any figures in this workshop report. There are multiple figures in our group project report.
