Project Abstract
The UGMS committee implemented the approach to combine the results from the NGA West2 GMPE’s with those from CyberShake in order to determine MCER response spectra for southern California, per the procedures in the ASCE 7-16 standard. A Beta version of a web look-up tool to obtain the MCER was developed and circulated for review among UGMS committee members and the City of Los Angeles, SEAOSC, and OSHPD representatives. Based on their review comments, revisions to the tool were started at the end of 2017 and carried over into the 2018.
Intellectual Merit The novel concept employed in the research was to directly use the results of 3-D numerical simulations in the development of MCER ground motion for use in building design. Simulations have not been directly used in this manner before.
Broader Impacts The MCER response spectra obtained for southern California under this project is considered to better account for the 3-D basin structure, and the coupling of seismic waves emanating from the regions active faults and propagating within and interacting with a 3-D velocity structure of the region.
