Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Guidance on the utilization of ground motion simulations in engineering practice

Brendon A. Bradley, Didier Pettinga, & Jack W. Baker

Published August 9, 2016, SCEC Contribution #6590, 2016 SCEC Annual Meeting Poster #296

This poster provides an update on current progress to develop guidance on the utilization of ground motion simulations in engineering practice. A summary is provided of the key ingredients of ground motion simulations and the critical role of verification, validation and utilization documentation in order to develop confidence in the predictive capabilities of the simulations. The conceptual framework in which validation can be undertaken is examined in particular. An example validation process for simulations of a prospective Alpine Fault rupture is illustrated for clarity.
