Dr Athanassios Ganas holds a BSc degree in Geology from the National-Kapodistrian University of Athens (1986), an MSc in Structural Geology from Carleton University, Ottawa (1990) and a PhD in Geological Remote Sensing and Earth Sciences from the University of Reading, UK (1997). His expertise is Active Tectonics and Geohazards – Fault mechanics - Seismology and Remote Sensing / Earth Observation including Stress Transfer, Tectonic Geomorphology, InSAR and GNSS networks. He was a Principal Investigator for the European Space Agency (ESA) – ERS and ENVISAT missions. He has published 122 peer-reviewed papers in major international journals (JGR-Solid Earth, EPSL, NSR, Tectonophysics, Geomorphology, GJI, JOSE etc.). He has 2501 citations on the Scopus Citation Index (h-index = 28). In 2018 he was a Visiting Professor at the GNSS Research Centre of Wuhan University (China) and at the Department of Geosciences, École Normale Supérieure (Paris, France). He has received 3 Academy of Athens Awards. He has coordinated and participated in 51 international (including EU, NATO etc.) and National research projects. His funding record for the period 2000-2022 exceeds the amount of 1.8M Euros. Since May 2009 he serves as Member of the Greek National Committee for Seismic Hazard Assessment. Since March 2010 he is an elected Member of the Executive Board of the Geological Society of Greece (Vice-President during 2016-2018) and he now serves as elected President (2021-2023). He is the Editor-in-Chief of BGSG for 2016-2022 https://ejournals.epublishing.ekt.gr/index.php/geosociety. During 2010-2017 he served as regular member at the Board of Directors of the EPPO (Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Athens, Greece). Since 2010 he is involved with the Geodetic Data group of the EPOS https://www.epos-eu.org/ project and since 2021 is a member of the TCS-GNSS Consortium Board.
