SCEC Workshop on Earthquake Ground Motion Simulation and Validation
Conveners: Phil Maechling (USC/SCEC), Tom Jordan (USC), Nico Luco (USGS), Sanaz Rezaeian (USGS)
Dates: September 7, 2014 (09:00 – 17:00)
Location: Hilton Palm Springs Resort, Palm Springs, CA
The SCEC Community Modeling Environment (CME) and the SCEC Ground Motion Simulation Validation (GMSV) Technical Activity Group will convene a full-day workshop focused on earthquake ground motion simulation and validation. One objective of this workshop is to communicate recent progress performing and improving ground motion simulation methods with the broader SCEC research community. A second objective is to continue SCEC’s collaborative effort with the earthquake engineering community in the development of validation methods required to accelerate the introduction of physics-based ground motion simulations into engineering use.
Session 1 (Morning) Recent Advances in Ground Motion Simulation Methods: SCEC’s CME research collaboration uses a system science approach to develop and improve physics-based ground motion modeling computational methods. CME researchers are improving ground motion simulation methods by integrating better geophysical models, more realistic earthquake source descriptions, improved physics in ground motion simulation software, and advanced computational software and systems. Session One will focus on recent scientific and engineering results from SCEC ground motion simulation modelers and recent improvements to computational software and methods.
Session 2 (Afternoon) Development of Ground Motion Simulation Validation Methods: SCEC’s GMSV activity is a collaboration between scientists and engineers to develop and implement testing and rating methodologies for simulated ground motions to be used in engineering applications. Session Two will discuss recent experience and progress from engineering projects that are collaborating with SCEC on the evaluation and use of ground motion simulation methods. This session will also discuss the goals and practical challenges that must be addressed to implement and use proposed ground motion validation methodologies.
Session 3 (Concluding Hour): Development of an Integrated Ground Motion Simulation Validation Program: Ground motion simulation improvements are expected to come from diverse sources, including improved geophysical model inputs, the use of more realistic physics in simulations, and improved computational methodologies. The concluding session will develop the outline for an integrated validation program, covering all these areas, involving scientists and engineers, that will accelerate the use of ground motion modeling methods by engineering users.
