Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

California Earthquake Clearinghouse: Training and Fieldwork Limited Liability Certification

Conveners: Anne Rosinski (CGS), Maggie Ortiz (EERI), and Mike Oskin (UC Davis)
Location: Hilton Palm Springs Resort, Palm Springs, CA
Date: September 13, 2015

OVERVIEW: The California Earthquake Clearinghouse is where, after a damaging earthquake, engineers, geologists, seismologists, sociologists, economists, and other professionals who arrive in the affected area to investigate such things as ground failure, structural damage, social or financial impacts of devastation, or simply to lend a hand can become part of a larger, temporary organization (the Clearinghouse) to facilitate the gathering of information, maximize its availability, and support of federal, state, and local, disaster response and recovery efforts. The Clearinghouse is now recognized as an official Disaster Service Worker (DSW) organization by the State of California, meaning that we are authorized to offer limited liability coverage for anyone who participates during a Clearinghouse activation (actual earthquake response or training exercise). In order to be eligible for this coverage, you must attend a training session and be administered the state Oath of Allegiance (California Government Code §3103). The Clearinghouse will be offering two training sessions on Sunday, September 13, at the SCEC Annual meeting: 1-3pm and 3-5pm. The training will include an overview of Clearinghouse functions, activation procedures, the National Incident Management System, and safety in the field. Participants are encouraged to bring laptop computers or mobile devices so that they can register for the Clearinghouse site and try out its features. At the conclusion of the training, participants will be administered the Oath of Allegiance. Note, the DSW program requires that you attend the training in-person, so don’t miss out on this convenient training opportunity!
