Date: September 10, 2017
Time: 1:30pm-5:00pm
Location: Hilton Palm Springs Resort, Palm Canyon Room

Conveners: Jason Ballmann, Mark Benthien, and Zachary Hall

SUMMARY: Following the path forward established at last year’s SCEC Annual Meeting (2016) communications workshop, this year’s workshop continues to address how the SCEC community disseminates its diverse amount of research to the public and media. A particular focus will be to explore the role of public information officers (PIOs), provide tools and techniques for how scientists can better work with PIOs, and how scientists can be their own PIO. Additionally, attendees will be given the opportunity to implement theory into practice via breakout practice sessions with peers, led by workshop conveners, that will cover many aspects of media training and public speaking. Light refreshments will be served.
