SUMMARY: SCEC has been promoting for decades a physics-based approach to ground motion simulation for hazard mapping and engineering applications. As we transition from the hybrid approaches of the past to the fully-deterministic broad¬band simulations of SCEC5, we are called upon to develop capabilities for the SCEC simulation frameworks to capture the nonlinear response of shallow crustal materials (weathered rock and sedimentary soils) that dominates the high frequency regime of earthquake problems. 

In this workshop, invited speakers will summarize past and current research efforts on various aspects of the topic, including constitutive modeling of rock and soil properties; characterization and simulation of spatial heterogeneity; integration of the above in one-, two- and three-dimensional wave propagation simulations (including topography effects); and pertinent implementation challenges related to high-performance computing simulation.

The talks are organized to provide an overview of the state-of-the art that will act as springboard for discussion, which we hope will be the main activity of the workshop. Our goals are: (i) to foster collaboration between geotechnical engineers, geo-material scientists, and computational seismologists, bridging the scale between site-specific and region-specific simulations of nonlinear response; (ii) to collectively develop a roadmap of research milestones to integrate nonlinear effects in physics-based broadband simulations within SCEC5; and (iii) to reach consensus required to translate the roadmap into a Technical Activity Group (TAG) charged to coordinate and support our collaborative research on the subject of integrating nonlinear models in broadband physics-based simulations.
