Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

SUMMARY: During these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to stay connected. We invite all students and early-career researchers to attend a special session at the 2020 online SCEC Annual Meeting.  SCEC’s Office of Experiential Learning and Career Advancement (ELCA) is hosting its 4th annual Transitions Program Breakfast Club meeting held for the first time virtually. Given that folks are joining from all over the world, it might even still be breakfast time somewhere. Join fellow students and early career peers to discuss and share career building strategies during times of adversity. Seasoned SCEC professionals will share their experiences when they’ve had to pivot and be flexible during previous times of uncertainty and change.

Career building strategies - Overcoming Adversities and Working Remotely
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask SCEC’s seasoned professionals about:

  • Living/working through the kind of major natural disasters (and socio-political unrest) that you may be experiencing for the first time right now
  • Persistent systemic barriers (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.) that you might be facing in your career
  • Demands of family/self-care during critical career junctures
  • Navigating a difficult job market during an economic downturn

...and we may also discuss some experiences that are new to all of us right now:

  • How our institutions are recruiting students/postdocs remotely
  • How to meet people and network effectively during virtual conferences
  • How to stay focused and productive, and battle feelings of isolation, while working remotely

Space is limited! Click here to register for this event.
