Unlike the sensationalized Hollywood depictions of earthquakes, researchers say there is still no way to predict how and when earthquakes will strike. John Vidale, Director of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC); and Yifeng Cui, a seismologist with the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego and a SCEC collaborator, describe the advancements in scientifically-based earthquake research, which today relies on detailed simulations of ground movements using some of the world’s largest and most capable supercomputers.
