Graduate Student Opportunity: Earthquake and Tectonic Processes, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lehigh University

The research group of Bar in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) is seeking a graduate student to study earthquake and tectonic processes using numerical modeling, geodetic observations, and quantitative geomorphology. Potential projects include investigating the relationship between interseismic fault coupling and earthquake rupture, understanding earthquake-cycle behavior and fault mechanics using seismic-cycle simulations and neural networks, and using landscape inversion to understand long-term tectonic deformation. Students with backgrounds in geophysics, geology, physics, computer science and related fields are encouraged to apply. Interested students should contact Bar at bar.oryan@lehigh.edu with a CV and a brief statement of research interests. Students are also encouraged to join Lehigh EES's virtual graduate recruitment event on October 28; register at https://ulvis.net/JWeU. Learn more about the department at https://ulvis.net/5t1O.

Multiple postdoctoral fellowships in geophysics at Caltech

We are pleased to announce several postdoctoral fellowship opportunities across geophysics at Caltech. The Seismological Laboratory, within the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS), conducts research in seismology, earthquake physics, geodesy, geodynamics, mineral physics, tectonics, planetary geophysics, and glaciology. We also work on seismic network operations, earthquake early warning, and new geophysical sensing methods (e.g., DAS, NISAR).

There are two application routes:

GPS division prize fellowships: November 6, 2026. The O.K. Earl and Barr fellowships support research in Earth and planetary sciences, with Barr emphasizing interdisciplinary work in comparative planetary evolution. They share one application. The Stanback Fellowship focuses on global environmental science and requires a separate application.

Seismo Lab fellowships: December 15, 2026. Apply through the Seismological Laboratory Director’s Fellowship announcement to be considered for both the Director’s Fellowship and the Geophysics Option Postdoctoral Fellowship. These opportunities cover the full range of research within the Lab.

Geophysics applicants to any of the division prize fellowships will automatically be considered for both the Director’s and Geophysics Option fellowships. No additional Seismo Lab application is needed. Applying directly through the Seismo Lab announcement is equally welcome; a division prize application is not required.

Applicants through either route may also be considered for other faculty-funded postdoctoral positions.
Applications generally include a CV, research statements, and three letters of recommendation. Identifying or contacting potential faculty hosts is encouraged but not required. Please follow the specific requirements for each program.

The Caltech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship is an additional institute-wide opportunity with a separate application process. Please check its announcement for upcoming deadlines.

Please share these opportunities with students and colleagues who may be interested. We look forward to welcoming postdocs with new ideas and a wide range of research interests.
