2026 SCEC SEAS Workshop
The SCEC SEAS group is convening a Zoom workshop on November 20, 2026 to discuss advances in modeling Sequences of Earthquakes and Aseismic Slip (SEAS) and community efforts to verify these simulations. The workshop will connect current science directions with ongoing and upcoming benchmarks, including a discussion of future benchmarks using complex 3D fault geometries.
Physics-based models of Sequences of Earthquakes and Aseismic Slip (SEAS) help us understand how faults behave throughout the seismic cycle, from gradual loading and aseismic slip to earthquake nucleation and dynamic rupture. As these models incorporate additional physical processes and more realistic fault systems, they must resolve an increasingly wide range of temporal and spatial scales. Community code verification is essential for addressing these numerical challenges.
The workshop will bring together earthquake scientists and modelers to discuss fluid-induced slip, computational challenges in SEAS modeling, and the effects of multifault interactions and fault geometry. Invited talks will connect current and proposed benchmarks to broader research themes. We will review comparisons of submitted results for our most recently released benchmark, BP8, and introduce our upcoming benchmark, BP9. The workshop will conclude with a community discussion of a new long-term benchmarking direction using 3D fault geometries adapted from the SCEC Community Fault Model (CFM).

We welcome researchers, model developers, students, and others interested in earthquake and aseismic slip simulations, dynamic rupture, earthquake-source physics, and code verification. Participants at all career stages are encouraged to attend.
