AGU session: Illuminating Complex Earthquake Rupture Processes with Geodesy from the Surface to Depth (S021)
|
Our session is motivated by the unprecedented wealth of geodetic and seismologic observations collected for recent large earthquakes, which provide new opportunities to investigate earthquake rupture processes across a range of tectonic settings. We welcome contributions that integrate geodesy and seismology to improve our understanding of earthquake source physics and associated hazards.
|
We particularly encourage studies covering:
|
- Recent events which integrate geodetic observations with seismological, geological, or numerical modeling approaches for comprehensive characterization of earthquake sources, surface rupture, and hazard.
- Constraints on detailed surface and subsurface rupture kinematics and dynamics using geodetic and seismic observations.
- Investigations into the influence of fault geometry, segmentation, and structural complexity on earthquake rupture behavior.
- Studies exploring interactions between seismic slip and triggered processes, including aftershocks, aseismic slip, landslides, and other secondary hazards.

2027 US & Chile Exchange Program - Apply Now
|
The program supports undergraduate students, graduate students, and early-career scientists (within three years of their last degree) based in the United States or Chile to conduct a one-month research exchange at a partner institution in the other country, fostering international collaboration and expanding research opportunities in subduction zone science.
|
SZNet will support up to 6 participants, covering travel, lodging, and meals through the National Science Foundation AccelNet program (award 2301732).
|
Applicants must be affiliated with a US or Chilean institution at the time of application. Proposed projects should broadly relate broadly to subduction zone geohazards and may span physical sciences, social sciences, education, monitoring, or any related fields.
|
Information for Applicants
|
Applicants may either identify a host from the list of registered hosts or apply with an existing collaborator in the partner country. In both cases, applicants should work with their host to develop a research project before submitting their application.
|
A letter of collaboration from the host confirming that the proposed project has been discussed is required as part of the application. Early coordination with your host will strengthen your proposal and help ensure alignment of research goals.

We are pleased to announce the 2027 Workshop on Earthquake Physics and Artificial Intelligence, which will build on the legacy of the three TECTONIC ERC workshops.

The workshop will take place at the École Normale Supérieure, Paris, France (ENS-PSL), from 7 to 11 June 2027.
|
The programme will include invited and contributed talks, poster sessions, and ample time for formal and informal discussions, with the aim of fostering exchange across the earthquake physics and artificial intelligence communities.
|

We are delighted to invite you to participate and contribute to our AGU scientific session titled "Evolution of Fault Zone Properties Through the Seismic Cycle", scheduled for the AGU 2026 meeting (https://www.agu.org/annual-meeting) held 7-11 December 2026 in San Francisco (CA).
|

Session Overview: T003 - Evolution of fault zone properties through the seismic cycle.
|
Fault zone frictional and transport properties evolve throughout the seismic cycle, with rapid changes during earthquakes and longer-term modification through healing and rock alteration during post- to interseismic periods. This session focuses on spatio-temporal evolution of fault zone properties, emphasizing both frictional and cohesive healing within the fault core and the surrounding damage zone. We highlight processes operating over coseismic to interseismic timescales and across the full range of crustal depths, from shallow brittle environments to deeper ductile regimes. Contributions exploring hydro-thermo-chemo-mechanical interactions including fluid flow, fluid-rock reactions, mineral precipitation, microstructural recovery, and off-fault deformation are particularly encouraged.

Call for Contributions: We invite interdisciplinary and multiscale studies integrating field observations, laboratory experiments, seismology, geodesy, remote sensing, and numerical modeling to advance understanding of how healing processes influence fault strength, permeability, and earthquake recurrence. This session aims to bridge spatial and temporal scales to better constrain how fault zones recover, evolve, and condition future seismic behavior.
