Engineering Geologist opportunity with the California Geological Survey, Seismic Hazards Program

The California Geological Survey (CGS) is looking for candidates with a background in engineering geology, geologic mapping, and seismic hazard assessment to join the Seismic Hazards Program.

The Engineering Geologist prepares detailed geologic maps and accompanying reports, and develops maps of geologic materials, landslide and liquefaction ground failure inventories, historical groundwater data, and seismic hazard zones. This work draws on seismological, geotechnical, and topographic data compiled and analyzed within a geographic information system (GIS). The position supports the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program, which produces the official Seismic Hazard Zone maps used by cities and counties across California to reduce loss of life and property from earthquake-triggered ground failure.

This is a permanent, full-time position with hybrid telework. Employees are required to work in person at least four days per week at one of the following locations:

  • 1900 S. Norfolk St., Suite 300, San Mateo, CA 94403

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (https://epsci.stanford.edu) at Stanford University and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the geology and mechanics of rocks and deformation of the Earth's crust. We seek candidates whose research addresses how rocks deform, fracture, flow, and interact with fluids in the upper crust, using field observation as a foundation and quantitative methods, including experimental, numerical, or analytical, to understand the underlying processes.

BSSA Call for Papers: Optical Seismology and Next Era in Seismic Sensing

Deadline for Submission: 1 February 2027

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has been a tool of seismologists for nearly two decades, revolutionizing high-density seismic sensing. While DAS theory and techniques continue to advance, the rapidly evolving field of optical seismology has added a range of other, complementary seismic sensing techniques. These include but are not limited to optical frequency combs; optical interferometry used in integrated fiber-optic sensing; fiber Bragg grating; optical polarimeters for rotational sensing and trends in miniaturization of components as well as improvements in DAS instrumentation and analysis.

BSSA invites submissions that highlight advances in DAS, microcomb and other advanced sensing techniques in optical seismology, including studies using DAS or advanced optical techniques to study and improve seismic source characterization and earthquake source physics; fault structure imaging; ground motion modeling; site response; DAS array processing and interferometry; development of methodologies in earthquake early warning systems; innovative methodologies to study seafloor structures; innovative methodologies to resolve issues with optical data quality; multimodal observatories; deep learning methods, edge processing and other processing and analytic tools for optical seismology; and theoretical advances in the field.

Articles accepted to this BSSA Special Issue will be published online soon after acceptance and collectively in print in the October 2027 issue. Papers will be reviewed as they are received and published online prior to the print issue.
