Seeking Assistant Professor in Engineering Geology or Applied Geology, California State University, San Bernardino

Applications are invited for an Engineering Geologist or Applied Geoscientist, with strong preference given to candidates with industry or government experience in applied geosciences, who can mentor our students in pursuing professional licensure. We welcome candidates with experience in geotechnical analysis; site investigation; hazard assessment; civil, mining and environmental projects; shallow imaging for engineering applications; and/or remote sensing.

The candidate will be expected to teach Engineering Geology; a course in their area of expertise such as site investigation or advanced field geology; general education courses such as environmental geology; and other courses as needed. The candidate will also be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate (masters) students in research. A Ph.D. is required.
|

Three postdoctoral fellowship positions at the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab
|
The UC Berkeley Seismology Lab (BSL) has three postdoctoral fellowship positions available. Research areas of interest include earthquake detection and characterization, fault monitoring and temporal variations in crustal properties including those due to aquifer processes. We have a particular focus on the use of new DAS data being collected across northern California, and integrating DAS-based constraints with the regional broadband network. Faculty working in this domain who could act as the primary advisor include Prof Weiqiang Zhu, Prof Wenbo Wu, Prof Kristel Chanard, Prof Roland Burgmann and Prof Richard Allen.

The BSL brings together geophysical network development and operation with research into all aspects of earthquake processes, hazards and Earth structure. The faculty, researchers, postdocs, students and engineering staff work closely at the intersection of research and data collection to make new discoveries relating to Earth structure, earthquake processes and to develop new approaches to reduce hazards. Our expanding real-time data collection networks include several DAS fibers, very broadband seismic instrumentation, boreholes, geodetic observations and a smartphone accelerometer network.

The positions are available to start immediately, or when the successful applicant is available. The initial appointment would be for one year. Reappointment for a second and possibly third year is typical but dependent on satisfactory progress.
|

Thompson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geophysics at Stanford University

The Stanford Department of Geophysics has established the Thompson Postdoctoral Fellowship to be awarded to a candidate preferably within two years of receipt of the Ph.D. A candidate applying before completing their Ph.D. must have been awarded their degree before taking up the Fellowship. Our fellowship is open to applicants (whatever the discipline of their Ph.D.) in any area of geophysics, including basic and applied and sustainability science, and including new areas that cross classical disciplinary boundaries. Stanford Geophysics includes scholars across the spectrum from development of new methodology (“how we study”) to discovery science (“what we study”).

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and promise, and they will contribute to the growth and diversity of the Department. We seek candidates who have their own independent research agenda but have common interests with one or more existing faculty member(s) who will serve as a formal mentor(s). We encourage prospective applicants, before applying, to communicate with prospective faculty mentors. Fellowship candidates will automatically be considered for other available postdoctoral positions at Stanford in their fields of interest.

This postdoctoral fellowship will be awarded for a one-year period that can start any time between June 15th 2027 and June 30th 2028 with an anticipated extension for a second year. The compensation package includes a salary no less than $80,000/year (depending on experience), benefits, and a $15,000 research allowance.
|
Applications received by October 1st, 2026 will receive fullest consideration, but the position will remain open until filled. A short list of candidates will be interviewed in January 2027.

Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Lithospheric Deformation

The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) specializing in lithospheric deformation. The department welcomes candidates whose research complements its strengths in structural geology, tectonics, geomechanics, and lithospheric dynamics. Relevant specialties include deformation processes, fault zones and earthquakes, seismotectonics, landslides, volcanic or glacial deformation, and applications in energy, critical minerals, and geothermal exploration.

The successful candidate will establish an innovative, externally funded research program while teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, including participating in structural geology and tectonics field education. The position offers access to the Jackson School of Geosciences’ extensive research facilities and collaborations with major UT research institutes, academic departments, computing centers, and national and international partners in the Austin metropolitan area.
