NASA Training Invitation: Identifying Disaster Extent and Risk Using NISAR Surface Displacement
Small changes in Earth’s surface can serve as early indicators of potential natural hazards. For example, subtle ground movements may signal areas at risk of landslides, volcanic activity, or earthquakes. Additionally, measuring the extent of surface displacement after an earthquake can help assess both the magnitude of the event and the areas affected, including regions that may have been damaged or destroyed.
These measurements are made possible through Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), which is a technique that NISAR is specifically designed to support. In addition, displacement products based on InSAR are being developed and made available through NASA’s Observational Products for End-Users from Remote Sensing Analysis (OPERA) project.
This intermediate, two-part training will focus on the use of InSAR data from NISAR and surface displacement products from OPERA to monitor ground movements and assess areas at risk of landslides, earthquakes, and other natural hazards. The training will also include demonstrations on how to use these data products to evaluate regions that may have been damaged by seismic events.

Subject #1: Assistant Faculty Search at Rice University - Geoscience Innovation with AI
The Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Rice University, in Houston, TX, seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Applications are encouraged from scientists who innovatively develop and adapt Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods to advance understanding of processes in Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences. Approaches that harness the potential of AI in conjunction with terrestrial or space-based geoscience data, computational and physics-based modeling of geoscience processes, and/or field observations are encouraged. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated expertise in developing and adapting AI methods for problems in the geoscience domain, potentially encompassing molecular to planetary scales and from Earth’s atmosphere to its deep interior. We welcome research linked to major challenges in natural hazards, energy transition, climate, and environmental systems.
The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program, teach core courses, and develop undergraduate and graduate courses within their area of expertise, and be involved in service to the department, university, and the broader scientific community. Candidates are encouraged to consider their alignment with initiatives outlined in Rice’s strategic plan (https://momentous.rice.edu/).
Subject # 2: Postdoc Fellowship at Rice University The Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (EEPS) at Rice University invites applications for the Pan Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (https://eeps.rice.edu/eeps-job-opportunities-pan-postdoctoral-research-fellowship). We seek candidates with independent research interests that intersect with one or more faculty within our department and who contribute positively to the Rice EEPS community, including its education and outreach efforts. Both domestic and international applicants are welcome. Upon starting the position, candidates must have received their PhD within the last three years. The research fellowship will be supported for two years --- pending satisfactory progress during the first year --- and includes an annual stipend of $68,000 with a benefits package, an annual discretionary research allowance of $5,000, and an allowance for re-location expenses. Applicants are requested to develop a proposal of research to be undertaken during the fellowship. The principal selection criteria are scientific excellence, the applicant’s record of research productivity, a clearly expressed research plan to address questions at the forefront of their field within EEPS, research synergies with at least one faculty, and a commitment to inclusive participation in science. The proposed research should explore new directions beyond the applicant’s Ph.D. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposals demonstrate independence and originality, along with the potential for collaboration with one or more EEPS faculty. All interested applicants should apply by October 25th, 2026 using this link (https://tinyurl.com/mthsmr28) AND have reference letters submitted via email to esci-postdocs@rice.edu.
