2026 SCEC ShakeOut Scenario 2.0 Workshop
The 2026 SCEC ShakeOut Scenario 2.0 Workshop will be held October 6–7, 2026, on campus at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The workshop will bring together researchers, engineers, practitioners, emergency-management professionals, infrastructure specialists, and other stakeholders to review progress and help guide the continued development of ShakeOut Scenario 2.0.

The influential 2008 ShakeOut Scenario transformed how scientists, engineers, emergency managers, utilities, and public officials understood the consequences of a major southern San Andreas Fault earthquake. Nearly two decades later, advances in earthquake science, engineering, computational capabilities, and data availability—as well as significant changes to Southern California’s built environment, infrastructure systems, and societal conditions—provide an opportunity to reassess those impacts using current scientific understanding and present-day conditions.

ShakeOut Scenario 2.0 is a collaborative effort integrating advances in earthquake science, engineering, and the social sciences to develop updated earthquake scenarios that support mitigation, preparedness, and resilience planning across California. This workshop marks the culmination of intensive summer 2026 research activities and will connect the broader ShakeOut Scenario 2.0 community through scientific presentations, community discussions, stakeholder listening, poster presentations, and collaborative planning. Participants will evaluate the scientific foundation for the updated scenarios, connect hazard products with engineering and socioeconomic needs, identify shared priorities, and develop plans for the next phase of the effort.

Participation is expected to be limited to approximately 75 in-person participants, selected based on a short statement of interest and potential contribution to the workshop objectives. The priority application deadline is August 28, 2026, and accepted participants will be notified by September 3, 2026. Applications received after August 28 may be considered if space is available. Poster presentations are welcomed from participants to share ongoing research, preliminary results, methodologies, datasets, and applications related to ShakeOut Scenario 2.0.

There is no registration fee, and meals listed on the workshop agenda will be provided. Participants are responsible for their own lodging and transportation to and from the USC Hotel. Additional lodging and parking information will be provided to accepted participants as available.
