Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at LDEO of Columbia University

Description
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for the Postdoctoral Fellowships in the fields of Earth, Environmental, and Climate Sciences. Candidates should have recently completed their Ph.D. or should expect to complete their degree requirements by September 2027.

Researchers at the Observatory work to understand the dynamics of the Earth's chemical, physical, and biological systems, from the core to the upper atmosphere, including Earth-human interactions. Our scientists lead research in the fields of solid Earth dynamics; ocean, atmospheric, and climate systems; cryospheric dynamics; paleoclimate; bio-geoscience; and solutions to air, water or soil contamination impacting communities. An opportunity also exists for a fellowship in forest ecology with a fieldwork component at Black Rock Forest. See https://www.blackrockforest.org/black-rock-forest-postdoctoral-fellowship-program/ to explore research opportunities and the Black Rock Forest-specific fellowship details.

The principal selection criteria for Fellows are scientific excellence and a clearly expressed plan to investigate problems at the forefront of Earth science. Applications from all related fields are welcomed. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact potential mentors as early as possible. To find prospective mentors, you may read about the research conducted by our Professors, Lamont Research Professors, and Research Scientists at https://lamont.columbia.edu/research-divisions.

Fellowships are supported institutionally for 24 months, include a $12,000 research allowance, and carry an annual salary of $72,116. Successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for external funding and may be eligible for further internal awards and positions. Lamont is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those who are traditionally underrepresented in the fields of earth, environmental, and climate sciences.

UT Austin - Lithospheric Deformation - Assistant/Associate Professor Position

Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Lithospheric Deformation

Rank and Title:
Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) in Lithospheric Deformation

Position Description:
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) seeks to hire an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) in the field of Lithospheric Deformation. We seek a colleague with an innovative research and education vision, who will add to existing strengths in our department in structural geology, tectonics, geomechanics, and lithospheric dynamics. Example areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: structural geology and deformation processes; tectonic, glacial, planetary, injection-induced, volcanic collapse, or landslide-related deformation; fault zone geology and links to earthquake processes; geomechanics; seismotectonics; and structural and deformation processes applied to industry sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and geothermal exploration.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. The successful applicant is expected to establish a vibrant, externally funded research program.

Application Instructions:
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV including list of publications, two to three- page research statement outlining how the applicant’s expertise addresses the above criteria and their future research plans, a two-page teaching and mentoring statement, and a list of three individuals who would be able to provide letters of reference. Submit copies of these materials online via Interfolio’s ‘Apply Now’ option (https://apply.interfolio.com/192197). The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Postdoc Opportunity at KAUST in Simulation-based PSHA

Background: MCQsim is our physics-based earthquake simulator that models long-term stress accumulation and the resulting space-time-dependent earthquake occurrence on geometrically complex fault systems. MCQsim generates simulation-based earthquake rupture forecasts to be used within a PSHA framework; a working interface to OpenQuake already exists.

As part of a recently funded new project, we are looking for a postdoc with a solid background in PSHA to test and then use MCQsim-generated earthquake catalogs to generate credible and then validate hazard, and possibly risk, products for further application.

Why to apply this position
  • Simulation-based PSHA is moving from research curiosity to a serious complement to classical, catalog-limited hazard assessment. This project sits exactly at that transition.
  • Part of the validation is carried out together with industry partners on jointly defined scenarios and test cases, providing direct, hands-on exposure to applied hazard work.
  • Research facilities at KAUST include access to the Shaheen-3 supercomputer and dedicated high-end workstations.
  • Competitive salary with housing, medical coverage, and family support (e.g., schooling)
Your tasks
  • Generate hazard products from MCQsim catalogs: earthquake rupture forecasts, hazard curves, uniform-hazard spectra and hazard maps.
  • Validate the simulated hazard against observed seismicity and existing hazard models for selected target regions, including but not limited to the East and North Anatolian fault systems and further test sites developed together with collaborators.
  • Benchmark against state-of-practice PSHA: produce high-standard catalog-based hazard models using the MCQsim-based catalogs and compare our simulation-based results to published and recently developed data-based hazard models, with an emphasis on quantifying if, where and how reduction of epistemic uncertainty is achieved.
  • Assess and document quality: define and test quantitative PSHA validation metrics and apply them to simulated and regular PSHA; compose technical reports and a benchmarking study; write peer-reviewed publications and present work at relevant conferences and to collaborators
Required qualifications
  • PhD in seismology, geophysics, earthquake engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated PSHA experience through active hazard work: source models, MFDs, GMM selection, logic trees, hazard integration, disaggregation; experience with risk modelling a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of a PSHA code; preferably the OpenQuake PSHA engine.
  • Scientific programming in Python; comfortable in Linux/HPC environments.
  • Peer-reviewed publication record; strong written and spoken English.
Application
Cover letter, CV with publication list, and two to three referees to martin.mai@kaust.edu.sa and olaf.zielke@kaust.edu.sa. Reviewed on a rolling basis until filled.
