T009 - How We Observe, Analyze and Model Fault Creep to Better Understand Plate Boundary Deformation and Hazards
|
Not all fault slip occurs during earthquakes. Faults also slip aseismically, or creep, without strong shaking. Creep is observed throughout the earthquake cycle, during interseismic and postseismic periods, through alignment arrays, offset cultural features, strainmeters, creepmeters, characteristic repeating earthquakes, Global Navigation Satellite System and high-resolution remote sensing methods such as InSAR, UAVSAR, optical image correlation and lidar differencing. We invite geologists, geodesists, seismologists and modelers studying bulk deformation, fault mechanics, earthquake dynamics, and seismic cycling to share their work on creeping faults around the world. We encourage submissions with new creep observations and insights into variable constitutive and locking behavior along fault strike and dip, between faults, and over time, as well as studies of the role of off-fault deformation and/or rheology in creep behavior. We also welcome contributions from hazard modelers and engineers highlighting how creep and creep monitoring are considered in seismic and fault displacement hazard evaluations.

Event recurrence data are collected at points and then are extrapolated to linear or areal extents in conceptual models and forecasts. How to best assign magnitudes to paleo events, such as paloearthquakes, remains a vexing question.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone hosts a wide range of deformation processes and hazards, from slow slip and tremor to megathrust and crustal earthquakes, volcanic unrest, and cascading hazards. This session welcomes contributions that advance understanding of Cascadia across spatial and temporal scales, including observational, computational, experimental, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged research.

The rapidly evolving field of optical seismology has added a range of seismic sensing techniques and technologies to improve and complement distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). These include but are not limited to optical frequency combs; optical interferometry used in integrated fiber-optic sensing; fiber Bragg grating; optical polarimeters for rotational sensing and trends in miniaturization of components as well as improvements in DAS instrumentation and analysis.

SRL invites Focus Section submissions that highlight operational and monitoring applications for DAS, microcomb and other advanced sensing techniques in optical seismology, including monitoring of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis; monitoring of bridges, mining and construction sites, and urban infrastructure; seismic network application and integration on the seafloor; hydrodynamics and precipitation, hydrocarbon, geothermal and CO2 monitoring; meteorological observation; permafrost and glacial characterization and monitoring; DAS integration with earthquake early warning systems; and new DAS datasets and optical sensing software available to the seismological community.

Articles accepted to this SRL Focus Section will be published online soon after acceptance and collectively in print. Papers will be reviewed as they are received and published online prior to the print issue.

Call for Abstracts – AGU26 Session G022: The NISAR Mission – Early Results in Geodesy

We invite you to submit an abstract to AGU26 Session G022: "The NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) Mission – Early Results in Geodesy," to be held at the AGU Fall Meeting, 7–11 December 2026, in San Francisco, CA.
|
The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) Mission, launched successfully on July 30, 2025, began collecting all land and ice-covered surfaces every 12 days from ascending and descending orbit vantage points in early November 2025, and has released the global dataset in July 2026. The data are freely and openly distributed from the NASA Alaska Satellite Facility within days of acquisition. NISAR's consistent 12-day cadence, global coverage, potential improvement in coherence from L-band observations, and unique left-looking geometry make it a valuable tool for addressing fundamental questions in geodesy, including surface deformation measurements of processes that drive the earthquake cycle, volcanic inflation, landslides, and groundwater flux.

Thompson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geophysics at Stanford

The Stanford Department of Geophysics has established the Thompson Postdoctoral Fellowship to be awarded to a candidate preferably within two years of receipt of the Ph.D. A candidate applying before completing their Ph.D. must have been awarded their degree before taking up the Fellowship. Our fellowship is open to applicants (whatever the discipline of their Ph.D.) in any area of geophysics, including basic and applied and sustainability science, and including new areas that cross classical disciplinary boundaries. Stanford Geophysics includes scholars across the spectrum from development of new methodology (“how we study”) to discovery science (“what we study”).

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and promise, and they will contribute to the growth and diversity of the Department. We seek candidates who have their own independent research agenda but have common interests with one or more existing faculty member(s) who will serve as a formal mentor(s). We encourage prospective applicants, before applying, to communicate with prospective faculty mentors. Fellowship candidates will automatically be considered for other available postdoctoral positions at Stanford in their fields of interest. This postdoctoral fellowship will be awarded for a one-year period that can start any time between June 15th 2027 and June 30th 2028 with an anticipated extension for a second year. The compensation package includes a salary no less than $80,000/year (depending on experience), benefits, and a $15,000 research allowance. Applications received by October 1st, 2026 will receive fullest consideration, but the position will remain open until filled. A short list of candidates will be interviewed in January 2027.
