2026 SCEC SiERRa Workshop
The 2026 SCEC Sierra Earthquake Risk Reduction (SiERRa) Workshop will be held October 20–22, 2026, at the University of Nevada, Reno Lake Tahoe Campus. The workshop will bring together earthquake scientists and engineers, utilities, infrastructure operators, emergency-management professionals, and government agencies to develop coordinated priorities for reducing earthquake risk in the northern Walker Lane.

The northern Walker Lane of northeastern California and western Nevada is a region of significant earthquake hazard where active fault systems intersect with critical water, power, and transportation infrastructure. Yet many seismic sources remain poorly characterized, monitoring is relatively sparse, and important uncertainties persist in fault geometry, paleoseismic parameters, seismicity, strain accumulation, site conditions, and expected ground motions. Addressing these knowledge gaps requires closer coordination among researchers, engineers, infrastructure operators, and agencies across the California–Nevada border.

The workshop will launch the new Sierra Earthquake Risk Reduction Technical Activity Group (SiERRa-TAG). Through technical presentations and community discussions, a field trip to active faults and major water infrastructure, and interdisciplinary working groups, participants will assess critical data gaps, identify priority multidisciplinary studies, and connect earthquake-hazard science with engineering and infrastructure needs. The workshop will work toward an actionable SiERRa-TAG research plan, priorities for earthquake scenarios and ground-motion studies, and improved coordination for earthquake response across the region.

Participation is expected to be limited to approximately 40 in-person participants, selected based on a short statement of interest and potential contribution to the workshop objectives. The priority application deadline is September 4, 2026, and accepted participants will be notified by September 11, 2026. Applications received after September 4 may be considered if space is available.

Lodging, meals, and the field trip will be provided for accepted participants. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the Lake Tahoe Campus. Organizers are exploring complimentary group transportation between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the campus; interested participants should coordinate with the organizers before booking flights.
