We are pleased to announce the release of the latest SCEC Science Plan, launching a new call for Technical Activity Group (TAG) proposals due May 8, 2026, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time (UTC-7).

This year's Science Plan establishes seven high-priority scientific and translational objectives for the 2026–2029 period. These span Community Earth Models, earthquake scenario development, physics-based ground-motion simulation, engineering translation and applications, earthquake cycle simulation and forecasting, rapid post-earthquake response, and societal impact and workforce development. TAGs are expected to operate as coordinated, community-facing research hubs — integrating expertise across disciplines, institutions, and career stages — and to produce outcomes broadly useful to the SCEC community.

As SCEC prepares to launch its first cohort of TAGs in 2026, early community response signals strong enthusiasm and highlights the need for coordination across proposed efforts, given finite program resources. Nineteen Letters of Intent (LOIs), involving roughly 180 participants, were submitted in November 2025. Interested researchers are encouraged to review these TAG concepts and reach out to TAG coordinators where their expertise could contribute. Teams that did not submit a Letter of Intent remain fully eligible to submit a proposal, provided it is responsive to one or more SCEC objectives.

This call for proposals includes significant changes from prior years, and proposers are strongly encouraged to read the full RFP carefully. The document covers the definition of a TAG, proposal submission guidelines, budget expectations, the review process, evaluation criteria, and award procedures—all reflecting the TAG model's emphasis on integration and collective impact.
