Proper Acknowledgements and Credits

Registration for SCEC2025 is still open!

1. How to Acknowledge SCEC Research Funding and Support

The Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) through cooperative agreements with the University of Southern California (USC). Additional funding for SCEC research and educational activities is also provided by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Department of Energy (DOE), the W.M. Keck Foundation, the California Earthquake Authority (CEA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and potentially other sources.

Funding provided to SCEC supports earthquake research and education in California and beyond—engaging a community of over 1,000 active participants. The SCEC research program funds over 100 projects each year, including (a) smaller grants for individual scientists, (b) larger grants for collaborative teams, and (c) workshops that focus on specific research initiatives.

SCEC research, activities and products are a massive scientific enterprise, made possible by the collective efforts of many people and various sponsors. It is therefore appropriate to give credit to those who have supported the project or activity. SCEC researchers are requested to follow the guidelines below to acknowledge support by SCEC and its funding agencies when appropriate (as required in the subaward terms and conditions).

1a. Obtain a SCEC Contribution Number

Documents published by the SCEC community, including journal articles, books, chapters, presentations, etc. are collected in the SCEC publications database. Each record is identified by its SCEC Contribution Number. This number should be included in the acknowledgement of SCEC funding support.

Log into central.scec.org, and select Publications on your dashboard. Click the “ADD NEW” button, and fill in citation details (journal, title, co-authors, DOI, and other publication details.) Note the contribution number (at the top of the page) to include in your acknowledgments. Every new publication record will be reviewed before it is included in SCEC’s online database. Don’t forget to update the SCEC publication record to “published” (from submitted, accepted, under review) once your article has been published.

1b. Acknowledge Research Funding from SCEC

When the research is supported by SCEC’s prime awards from NSF or USGS only:

This research was supported by the Statewide California Earthquake Center (Contribution No.xxxx). SCEC is funded by NSF Cooperative Agreement EAR-2225216 and USGS Cooperative Agreement G24AC00072-00.

If the prime award is from another SCEC sponsor (such as NASA, DOE, Keck, or PG&E), please specify as shown below (see third sentence):

This research was supported by the Statewide California Earthquake Center (Contribution No.xxxx). SCEC is funded by NSF Cooperative Agreement EAR-2225216 and USGS Cooperative Agreement G24AC00072. Additional support was provided by [ … NASA Grant 80NSSC19K0739, DOE Grant DE-SC0016520, or the Pacific Gas and Electric Company … ].
1c. Acknowledge High-Performance Computing Support

SCEC’s high-performance computing (HPC) allocations provide researchers with access to external computing resources to conduct computationally intensive earthquake system science research. These are awarded through competitive proposals to USC, NSF, and DOE allocation programs. Please review the resource providers below and acknowledge any HPC resources used in your work.
