Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

AAPG Meeting in Long Beach

Date: 09/19/2006

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, 2007 AAPG ANNUAL MEETING, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA: DEADLINE, SEPT. 27, 2006

Dear SCEC Colleagues:

If you are not already aware, the 2007 AAPG Annual Convention, Understanding Earth Systems: Pursuing the Checkered Flag,” will be held locally in Long Beach, California, on April 1 4, 2007. Over 60 technical sessions within 12 broad themes are being proposed for the meeting. One of these themes “Theme XI - Geosciences and Public Policy”, is especially relevant to much of the research being conducted by the SCEC community. In particular, we would like to extend an invitation to all SCEC researchers to consider contributing an abstract to either the oral (O-72) or poster (P-72) presentation sessions entitled “The Dynamic Earth: Earthquake Risks and Geohazards, chaired by Dan Ponti and Lisa Grant. We extend this invitation to both professionals and student researchers.

As the session title suggests, we are looking for contributions that represent recent advances and approaches to evaluating and mitigating the risks from earthquakes and other geohazards, both within California and beyond. This session provides an excellent opportunity to expose your research to a broader community of investigators within industry and the public policy realms, and it is our hope that the session would serve as a catalyst to enhance further interdisciplinary interaction within the hazards community.

We hope that you will plan to attend this meeting and will give serious consideration to submitting an abstract to the geohazards or other relevant sessions. Please note that the abstract deadline is
fast approaching: September 27, 2006. Submissions are to be made online via the meeting web site: http://www.aapg.org/longbeach, where you will also find additional information about the meeting. Questions should be directed to the session chairs; their contact information is provided on the web site. There is no fee for submitting an abstract. Registration fees for the meeting are expected to be around $295 for professionals for all three days, much less (approx. $50) for students.
