Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

SoSAFE Workshop Draft Agenda (Jan 8-9, 2007)

Date: 12/06/2006

You can now download the draft agenda for the Southern San Andreas Fault Evaluation (SoSAFE) Workshop at http://www.scec.org/SoSAFE. (A text version is at the end of this announcement for your convenience.)

In addition to presentations and discussions of SoSAFE Project initiatives and strategies, workshop participants may also take part in commemorating the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake on January 9th.

For those who have not yet registered, online REGISTRATION CLOSES DEC. 11th! You may opt to attend one or both workshop days. Register now since meeting space is limited.

REGISTER ONLINE: http://www.scec.org/SoSAFE

If you have further questions regarding the SoSAFE Project, please contact Ken Hudnut (hudnut@usgs.gov). Technical issues pertaining to registration should be forward to John Marquis (marquis@usc.edu). If you have questions regarding meeting logistics (travel, parking, hotel, etc.), please contact Tran Huynh (huynht@usc.edu).

----------SoSAFE Workshop DRAFT AGENDA----------

Southern San Andreas Fault Evaluation (SoSAFE) Project
Convenor: Ken Hudnut
First Workshop SCEC, Los Angeles
Monday, 8 January 2007 10:00-18:00
Tuesday, 9 January 2007 7:00-17:00

SCEC3 Science Priority Objective A1:
"Define slip rate and earthquake history of southern San Andreas fault system for last 2000 years"

Goal: The newly formed SCEC Southern San Andreas Fault Evaluation (SoSAFE) Project will increase our knowledge of slip rates and paleo-event chronology for the past two thousand years on the southern San Andreas fault system. From Parkfield to Bombay Beach, and including the San Jacinto fault, the objective is to obtain new data to clarify and refine relative hazard assessments for each potential source of a future 'Big One.' This initial workshop is an opportunity for participants to coordinate and prioritize work proposed in response to the SCEC RFP, and to facilitate future collaborations in the broader context of a decade-long series of interdisciplinary, integrated and complementary studies on the southern San Andreas fault system. We will also commemorate the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake, a reminder that our collaboration in SCEC and in the SoSAFE Project does matter to our society that has "put down roots" during the past 150 years.

- What to do in case of no SoSAFE funds (or various levels of
cuts) in FY07? (definitely will need to recommend priority of work
and funding levels to the SCEC Planning Committee for Jan. 15
mtg.)
- How broad can SoSAFE afford to be? Stay with "A1" SCEC Science
Priority Objective or expand?
- Should specific proposals be moved out of SoSAFE?
- What are scientific priorities of this community?
- What group resources are needed? (e.g., travel support for field
coordination, computers to make use of B4 Project LIDAR data,
shoring)
- Fine-tuning the Mw7.8 scenario event slip distribution, fault
geometry, etc.
