Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

Announcing AGU Session T40: Fragmentation Processes in the Earth

Date: 08/19/2007

An AGU session announcement from Charlie Sammis, USC:

Dear SCEC Colleagues,

We encourage you to submit an abstract to our interdisciplinary session:

T40: Fragmentation Processes in the Earth (co-sponsors: C, MR)

Fragmentation processes are common in the Earth, occurring on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales and in diverse geological environments. Important examples include cataclasis in fault zones, fragmentation of ice flows, volcanic and hydrothermal brecciation, impact brecciation, fragmentation by underground explosions, physical weathering, polygonal jointing, mud cracking, and continental breakup. In this session we will address the mechanics of fragmentation, and compare geological signatures of fragmentation found in different geological systems using traditional and novel visualization and quantification techniques. We will also consider the influence of fragmentation on subsequent physical and chemical processes. A key goal will be to connect approaches in different disciplines. We invite contributions from field, laboratory, numerical and theoretical modeling that address this topic.

Best wishes,

Charles Sammis (University of Southern California)
Karen Mair (PGP, University of Oslo)
Bjorn Jamtveit (PGP, University of Oslo)
