PhD and postdoc positions in geodesy at the Earth Observatory of Singapore

Date: 09/28/2012

Announcement of research positions, forwarded from Sylvain Barbot, EOS:

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) invites applications for graduate students and post-doctoral research scientist positions in the fields of geodesy and tectonophysics. The successful applicants will work with investigators of the Tectonics and Climate groups on inter-connected problems related to natural hazards, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia and surroundings.

The successful candidates will join a dynamic team of geodesists, modelers and geologists interested in (1) increasing fundamental knowledge of the region’s tectonic and seismic behavior, for more reliable forecasting and mitigation of earthquake and tsunami hazards, and (2) developing our understanding of regional sea-level and water-storage change, to help prepare local communities for the future effects of a warming climate and a growing population.

We seek qualified, highly motivated candidates to participate in the following research activities:

- Design, analysis and modeling of continuously operating GPS and seismic networks in SE Asia, with applications to the physics of the earthquake cycle.

- Advance the understanding of the current and future behavior of faults and the lithosphere using seismological, geodetic (GPS, InSAR, GRACE) and geological constraints, and advanced numerical simulations.

- Study of regional sea-level change, combining the effects of climate change, tectonics, and localized subsidence. Project scope includes combination of GPS and InSAR data to monitor the effects of groundwater withdrawal.

Start dates for the postdoc positions are flexible, from immediate to the summer of 2013. PhD intakes occur in both January and August. Salaries are internationally competitive, and PhD scholarships are available.

More information about our institution and facilities can be found at http://www.earthobservatory.sg/

- Postdocs: A recent Ph.D. in Geophysics or a related discipline is required. Experience in computer programming is preferred, as well as research experience directly relevant to the research activities described above.

- Graduate students: A solid training and demonstrated excellence in geophysics, physics or related fields and a strong interest in geological processes.

How to apply:
Applicants for the post-doctoral position should submit a personal statement describing research experience and interests, including specific reference to the projects listed here, a curriculum vita, one representative publication, and the names and addresses of three references to eos_humanresources@ntu.edu.sg. Guidelines for PhD applications can be found in the attached pamphlets.
