Faculty Positions Open at Ruhr University Bochum Institute for Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics

The Institute for Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics in the Faculty of Geosciences at Ruhr University Bochum invites applications for the position of a
Professor (W 2) in “Hydro-geochemistry” to be filled on October 1st, 2018.

Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to, the characterization of coupled processes in unconsolidated and solid rocks, with focus on practical applications of research results. The candidate will be expected to link laboratory and modeling results with field observations. Experience in one or more of the following areas is required: 1. hydrogeochemical water-rock-interactions, 2. hydrogeochemical modeling 3. hydrogeochemical processes in geothermal applications.

The successful candidate should hold a degree in the earth sciences and a doctorate in hydrochemistry / environmental geology, and have a proven track record of successful teaching (including in field-based courses), international research visibility, and the ability to procure external research funds. Experience in project management is advantageous.

Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic qualifications (e.g., habilitation) and evidence for academic excellence and achievements are required corresponding to the appointment at the Professor level.

In addition, the successful candidate must exhibit the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB, and the involvement in university processes according to RUB’s mission statement. We further expect:

- high commitment to teaching, particularly in field courses
- willingness to actively contribute to the institute´s research focus on “Antropolithosphere”, as well as one or several of the Research Departments at the RUB
- readiness to participate in interdisciplinary academic work
- willingness and ability to attract external funding.
Knowledge of the German language at the time of appointment is not mandatory. The successful candidate is, however, expected to acquire the proficiency in the German language needed for teaching and participation in self-governing bodies within 2 years.

Professor (W 3) in “Tectonics and Resources” to start on October 1st, 2018.

The successful candidate is expected to have research and teaching interests with special emphasis on the role of tectonics in the origin, exploration strategy, and evaluation of natural resources and to further develop the respective research fields. The faculty also expects a willingness to take on a leading role in the development of an international Masters program “Resources and Energy”.
