Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

1. Faculty Position in Crust/Lithosphere Evolution, UC Davis:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Davis seeks a geologist who investigates the generation, evolution, and deformation of Earth’s crust and lithosphere. For this tenure-track faculty position, we seek candidates whose research is anchored in the rock record and addresses fundamental problems related to the Earth’s physical and chemical evolution over geologic time.

For full consideration, please submit your application by October 20. For more information, see our web site: https://geology.ucdavis.edu/jobs

2. Deadline extended for USGS Mendenhall Postdoc on seismic hazards/EQ geology in northern California:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have extended the deadline to apply to a Mendenhall postdoc opportunity in the Northern California Earthquake Geology Project at the USGS Earthquake Science Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View California. We seek a creative geologist or geophysicist to study seismic hazard associated with faults in the San Joaquin and Sacramento Delta region, with additional freedom to work on intellectually related problems of faulting, fault activity and natural hazards.

The posting is below and the application deadline is September 27 with a flexible start date:

https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall/s38-improved-understanding-seism...

The position will be based in our new offices at NASA's Moffett Field in Mountain View California.

To apply an ~8 page proposal is required and candidates can (should) contact research advisers to discuss: Steve DeLong, Belle Philibosian, Kate Scharer, Keith Knudsen.

Unlike some Mendenhall opportunities that compete internally for funds, this one is funded and will be filled.

Thanks!

Steve

3. Registration Open: Oct. 10 NGA-East Seminar in Washington DC:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

EERI is hosting a workshop on NGA-East on October 10 at the NIST facilities in Washington DC. The registration is now open. Links and information below.

Please share with your colleagues and encourage them to attend!

Looking forward to see you there.

Sincerely,

Christine Goulet, PhD
Executive Director for Applied Science
Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC)
University of Southern California

Register today for EERI's special seminar on the Next Generation Attenuation Relationships for Central & Eastern North-America (NGA-East)! As an EERI member, you're guaranteed a discounted rate.

What: NGA-East – Ground Motion Hazard for Very Hard Rock

When: Thursday, October 10, 9 am - 5 pm

Where: National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD (just outside of Washington DC)

Speakers:

• Yousef Bozorgnia, Ph.D., P.E., Professor, UCLA
• Christine Goulet, Ph.D., Executive Director for Applied Science, Southern California Earthquake Center
• Jonathan Stewart, Ph.D., P.E., Professor, UCLA
• Nicolas Kuehn, Ph.D., Project Scientist, UCLA
• Robert Graves, Ph.D., Research Geophysicist, U.S. Geological Survey
• Linda Al Atik, Ph.D., Linda Alatik Consulting

Who should attend? Nuclear power, geotechnical, lifeline, and structural engineers; seismologists; engineering geologists; urban planners; insurance professionals; risk modelers; and students.

REGISTER HERE

At this seminar, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the database, methodology, and models developed by the NGA-East project. You’ll learn about the technical basis and model development of the ground motion models (GMM) for median and standard deviations for Central and Eastern North America.

The seminar will also summarize the key differences with previously released GMMs for use in probabilistic seismic hazard analyses. The seminar is focused on the hazard implementation for very hard rock, as for nuclear applications and site-specific studies. We will also touch on the implementation of the NGA-East models in the USGS National Seismic Hazard Models, and the recommended site amplification models.

NGA-East is a multi-disciplinary research project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. The project is jointly sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

5. MCS Megathrust Workshop - Remote Participation:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

It is now possible to register to participate remotely in the MCS RCN Megathrust Modeling Workshop, which will take place from October 7-9 in Eugene, OR. To register, please go to:https://zoom.us/webinar/register/6415686551113/WN_chMFg0LRTpGsTSUsT7f1mA.

The Megathrust Modeling Workshop will focus on assessing the critical aspects of faulting, earthquake sequences and aseismic slip, and megathrust rupture dynamics that should be included in the future integrative community modeling framework for subduction zones. For the full schedule of events and speakers, please visit our website.
Remote participants will be able to listen in on all talks, discussions, and breakout sessions starting Oct 7 at 8:30 am PDT and ending Oct 9 at 12:00 pm. Please note that the Early Career Session on Oct 6 will not be streamed. Online attendees can leave comments and ask questions via the Q & A feature on Zoom.
