Exciting news! We're transitioning to the Statewide California Earthquake Center. Our new website is under construction, but we'll continue using this website for SCEC business in the meantime. We're also archiving the Southern Center site to preserve its rich history. A new and improved platform is coming soon!

1. USGS Job Announcement: Research Geophysicist in ground motion:

The Earthquake Science Center is conducting an open search for up to two permanent Research Geophysicists in seismology/ground motion modeling in the Moffett Field (Mountain View), CA office. This permanent position is advertised at a GS13 or GS14 level. Duties include:
• Conducting research in seismology, which may include: numerical modeling of earthquake rupture; simulations of wave propagation through complex crustal structure; and analysis of ground-motion observations from earthquakes.
• Developing quantitative, physical models of the earthquake process and wave propagation using novel or complex modeling or computational methods, improving our ability to model or predict earthquake hazards;
• Benchmarking these models using earthquake observations, to provide information on accuracy of earthquake source and crustal property models; and,
• Developing approaches to incorporate new physical models or observations of earthquake source or crustal properties into key USGS products, such as ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW), ShakeMap or the National Seismic Hazard Maps.
For more information or to apply (closing date: 2/16/2021):

Please forward to those who may be interested!

2. Zuckerman PostDoctoral Fellowships Application at the University of Haifa, Israel:

Seeking for an appropriate candidate with US/Canadian citizenship for submission for Zuckerman Postdoctoral fellowships ($52,000 per academic year for up to two years) at the Dr. Moses Straus Dept. of Marine Geosciences, Univ of Haifa, Israel (closest submission deadline is March 15, 2021), to conduct a Numerical Modelling of Reservoir Induced Seismicity. Candidates are expected to show a solid background in areas of solid/rock mechanics, physics, mathematics, broad scientific interests, ability to conduct an interdisciplinary research, and sufficient English communication skills. Knowledge of flow in porous media is preferable.
