Scripps Geophysics Graduate Program Virtual Open House

Dear Prospective Graduate Students,

We invite you to join us on Friday, November 18th 2022, 10 am - 11 am PT (1 pm - 2 pm ET) for a virtual open house to learn about the Geophysics graduate program at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. 

During this event we will provide information about the application process and the Geophysics Graduate Program at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UC San Diego as well as brief presentations of the Director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Peter Shearer, current faculty and students in the Geophysics Curricular Group.

Postdoctoral Research Position in the Earth Observation Lab at Virginia Tech

We have an opening for a postdoctoral research position in the Earth Observation Lab of the Geoscience department at Virginia Tech. The position is adjunct to the Berkeley Seismology Lab. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with the possibility of extension for an additional two years, depending on performance.

The successful candidates will be supervised by Dr. Manoochehr Shirzaei and will work closely with Dr. Michael Manga. The primary location of this appointment is Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The postdocs will work on interdisciplinary projects focused on carbon capture, enhanced geothermal energy, induced seismicity, and their links to future water-energy security and climate change.

Required Skills and Background

Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, earth sciences, or related fields. The knowledge of poromechanical modeling. Also, the candidate must have strong skills in a technical programming language, such as MATLAB, PYTHON, or C++.

Desired Skills

Knowledge of GIS, numerical modeling, leadership skills, teaching, and writing experience.

UCLA Online Workshop: Overview of New Fault Displacement Database and Models

The UCLA Natural Hazards Risk and Resiliency Research Center (NHR3) and its partners are holding a free online workshop to present a new database and set of models for estimating fault displacement amplitude. The workshop will be held on Thursday, November 10th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (PDT). The goal of the workshop is to introduce the new database and models, provide recommendations to researchers and practitioners on applying the new models, and compare the new results with the commonly cited existing models.
