Intellectual Merit We explored a site near Coacheall, CA, near where I-10 crosses the San Andreas fault to extend the local paleo-earthquake record to at least 3000 years, determine the slip rate over the past 3-4,000 years, and attempt to determine slip per event for the past ~5 events. To date, we have established that an excellent ~3000 year stratigraphic and structural record exists at this site and we have established a very preliminary slip rate of somewhat less than 30 mm/yr.
Broader Impacts This project involved graduate and undergraduate students. The benefits to society include better characterizing the seismic hazard on what is believed to be the most "overdue" portion of the San Andreas fault.
