Intellectual Merit It has been established through experiments and theoretical models that an earthquake rupture strongly interacts with fracture damage in the fault zone. We have developed the first model that simulates this interaction at the high loading rates found in the process zone near the tip of a propagating rupture. We have validated our model by accurately simulating the strength of marble over 10 orders of magnitude in loading rate.
Broader Impacts This research has been done in collaboration with Professor Ares Rosakis, chairman of the engineering division at Caltech. It has been part of the post-doctoral training research fellow Dr. Harsha Bhat who will be continuing his career in earthquake mechanics next year on the faculty at IPPG Paris.
