Intellectual Merit One of the goals is to investigate the vertical deformation associated with motion along the SAFZ. We achieved this by producing a 3D dynamic model that reproduces the observed stress, strain, and horizontal velocity patterns. The benefits of this approach are a dynamic interaction between the rheology of the model (crustal structure), applied stress or kinematics, and the resultant deformation patterns.
Broader Impacts The long-term dynamic model may help to resolve geodetic and geologic rate discrepancies by addressing the deformation within a temporally scalable framework. The development of this model has directly impacted work of a hispanic Ph.D. candidate at UTEP (underrepresented group), as well as has broader applications to other areas (e.g. Norumbega Fault Zone in Maine).
