Intellectual Merit The project initiated development of a new computational tool that will permit resolution of small-scale processes at rupture fronts without compromise in parameters determined in laboratory experiments. This new capability will allow the results from experimentalists and geologists in FARM to be directly incorporated in rupture dynamics simulations, and will allow us to make testable predictions regarding the signature of dynamic weakening mechanisms in ground motion records.
Broader Impacts One postdoctoral scholar, with a strong background in applied mathematics and computational science, was recruited for this project and trained in geophysics and seismology. A new code is being developed that will be made available to the community.
