Project Abstract
In this proposal we requested 45 dates to provide additional age constraints on earthquakes at the Frazier Mountain paleoseismic site and to date shells collected from a small offset fan on the Coachella section of the San Andreas fault. We were allocated only 14 dates (including d13C analyses) and decided to use these on samples from Frazier, using separate funds to explore the isotopic systematics of the shells, rather than dating them. At the time of this report (February, 2012), we have not received the d13C analyses. When these have been reported and the radiocarbon dates calibrated, we will submit the results to SCEC radiocarbon database.
Intellectual Merit Radiocarbon dates contribute to reconstructions of past behavior of the San Andreas fault. This work is necessary to discriminate between models of fault behavior, and the earthquake ages provide the backbone for probabilistic seismic hazard assessments such as UCERF3.
