Project Abstract
This report summarizes the operations of the Southern California Earthquake Data Center for the year 2021, in which it archived 22,499 local events, 256 teleseismic events as recorded on 560 stations. It transferred over 300 Tbytes of data to users primarily through the AWS Open Dataset.
Intellectual Merit The Southern California Earthquake Data Center (SCEDC) provides the data for most seismic and earthquake in southern California. It archives all data from the Southern California Seismic Network as well as several derived products such as catalogs, phase picks and moment tensor solutions.
Broader Impacts The SCEDC is all about outreach. It is the primary data archive for seismic data in S. California. It has also created tutorials to help users use the data, and to take advantage of cloud computing when processing it.
Exemplary Figure Figure 2a. Access to the SCEDC waveform requests by method. In 2021, requests from the Open Dataset vastly outnumbered on premises access to the archive in both number of requests and the size of the data downloaded.
