Dr. Montesi is a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, department of Geology. His research addresses how magma migrates through the lithosphere of the Earth and other planets and, of particular interest of the SCEC community, how tectonic deformation localizes on ductile shear zones and brittle faults. His expertise is in modeling, using both analytical and numerical methods. He formulates rheological descriptions of rocks based on their microstructures, but aimed at capturing their lithospheric-scale behavior.
